WWI U.S. 3rd Army Infantry Private Tunic
WWI US Army Private’s Wool Tunic – Original Third Army Shoulder Flash – Philadelphia Depot
WWI US Army Private’s Wool Tunic – Original Third Army Shoulder Flash – Philadelphia Depot
A superb original First World War US Army enlisted man’s wool tunic, retaining its original Third Army shoulder flash, collar insignia and buttons.
This is an attractive example of the uniform worn by American soldiers during the closing years of the First World War. The tunic remains in lovely condition for its age, with a number of original details still present, making it an excellent addition to a collection of American military uniforms and WWI memorabilia.
The tunic retains its original metal insignia to the collar, together with all its buttons. Particularly desirable is the original US Third Army shoulder flash, an important identifying feature associated with the American forces serving in Europe during the final stages of the war.
Original Philadelphia Depot Label
Inside the tunic is a surviving label bearing the wording:
PHILA DEPOT – Q.M. CORPS – U.S. ARMY
This relates to the Philadelphia Depot and the US Army Quartermaster Corps, the organisation responsible for supplying and distributing military clothing and equipment. The surviving label adds further interest and authenticity to this original uniform.
The US Third Army in WWI
The American Third Army was organised in November 1918, shortly before the Armistice. Following the cessation of hostilities, it played an important role in the occupation of Germany, with American troops remaining in the region after the fighting ended.
The Third Army shoulder flash therefore connects this tunic to the final chapter of the American Expeditionary Forces’ involvement in the First World War and its immediate aftermath.
