The War Office initially ordered around 25,000 Brodie helmets; however, they quickly deemed them unsuitable due to the material used. These helmets, classified as early ‘A’ pattern models, were made from mild steel. As a result, they provided poor ballistic protection and, moreover, reportedly interfered with compasses because of their magnetic properties.

Experts believe that only about 4,000 of these magnetic ‘A’ pattern Brodies were produced. In response, manufacturers switched to the improved non-magnetic ‘B’ pattern, made from Hadfield steel—an alloy rich in manganese. This new material was approximately three times stronger and quickly became the standard.
