Wehrmacht Cold Weather Issue – Eastern Front, 1943–1944

An original pair of Second World War German Wehrmacht winter boots, manufactured from heavy wool felt with leather reinforcements and intended for use during the harsh winter campaigns on the Eastern Front.

Following the disastrous winter of 1941–42 in the Soviet Union, the German Army recognised that its standard leather marching boots offered inadequate protection against extreme cold. As a result, a range of specialised winter footwear was introduced from 1942 onwards, including insulated felt boots such as this pair. Designed to provide warmth and reduce frostbite, they became a familiar sight among Wehrmacht personnel operating in severe winter conditions.

This pair is believed to have been worn by Wehrmacht personnel during the 1943–44 Eastern Front campaign. While similar felt boots were issued across various branches of the German armed forces, they were commonly associated with armoured formations and troops serving in the freezing conditions of Russia and Ukraine. (Unless specifically identified by provenance or markings, it is not possible to confirm they were issued exclusively to Panzer crews.)

Recovered from a barn near Cherkassy (Cherkasy), Ukraine, the boots are offered in original, untouched condition. The Cherkassy region witnessed some of the fiercest fighting of the war during the Korsun–Cherkassy battles of 1944, when German forces fought desperately to escape Soviet encirclement.

The boots remain in well-worn condition, displaying honest age and service wear consistent with prolonged wartime use. They are approximately UK size 9–10 and have been preserved as found, making them an excellent display piece and an authentic survivor of the Eastern Front.
