Original WW1 Barbed Wire Picket Section – Somme Battlefield Relic – First World War Trench Warfare Artefact
Description
An original First World War barbed wire picket section, recovered from the Somme battlefield, one of the most iconic and fiercely contested battlefields of the Great War.
This authentic hand-forged iron picket retains its distinctive pointed driving spike, twisted retaining eye and hooked lower section. These pickets were driven deep into the ground by British, French and German troops before multiple strands of barbed wire were secured between them, creating the dense defensive entanglements that became synonymous with trench warfare.
Recovered from the historic Somme battlefield, this remarkable relic is a tangible survivor of one of the bloodiest campaigns of the First World War. The Battle of the Somme, fought between 1 July and 18 November 1916, witnessed over one million casualties as Allied and German forces fought across the scarred landscape of northern France. Vast networks of trenches and defensive wire dominated the battlefield, with iron pickets such as this forming the backbone of these formidable obstacles.
The picket remains in untouched relic condition, displaying over a century of natural corrosion and battlefield patina. And mud from the Battlefield. Its hand-forged construction is still clearly evident, making it both an evocative historical artefact and an impressive display piece.
Whether displayed on its own or as part of a larger Great War collection, this is a genuine piece of the Western Front with excellent historical provenance.

Historical Background
Barbed wire was one of the most effective defensive weapons of the First World War. Under the cover of darkness, Royal Engineers and infantry working parties hammered thousands of iron pickets into the ground before stretching multiple belts of barbed wire across No Man’s Land. These barriers delayed advancing troops, broke up infantry attacks and left soldiers exposed to devastating machine-gun and artillery fire.
During the Battle of the Somme in 1916, enormous quantities of barbed wire were employed by both sides. Despite extensive artillery bombardments, much of the German wire remained intact, contributing significantly to the terrible losses suffered during the opening stages of the offensive. Original battlefield-recovered pickets such as this are powerful reminders of the brutal realities of trench warfare.
