This rare and evocative image captures an important moment in Britain’s naval history, with King George V inspecting the damage sustained by ships of the Grand Fleet after the largest naval engagement of the First World War. Historical Background

Following the Battle of Jutland (31 May–1 June 1916), the Royal Navy’s Grand Fleet returned to its bases at Rosyth and Scapa Flow with many ships requiring extensive repairs after sustaining shellfire and blast damage during the engagement with the German High Seas Fleet.

Rosyth Dockyard became one of the principal centres for emergency repair work, where damaged battleships, battlecruisers and cruisers were rapidly restored to operational condition. Maintaining the strength of the Grand Fleet was vital to preserving Britain’s command of the North Sea and sustaining the naval blockade of Germany.

Throughout the war, King George V made a number of visits to naval bases and dockyards to inspect ships, meet officers and ratings, and observe repair operations. These visits were widely reported in the national press as a demonstration of royal support for the Royal Navy and those serving within it.

This photograph is believed to relate to one of those inspections following the Battle of Jutland, capturing the King’s interest in the condition of the fleet and the immense industrial effort required to return damaged warships to service.

The photograph remains in very good original condition with expected age-related handling wear associated with period press use. Image definition is excellent, with strong detail visible in the ship’s structure, armour plating and surrounding dockyard scene.
