Afrika Korps Officer’s Walking Out Cane

A fine and very attractive early Malacca walking cane, fitted with a beautifully detailed silvered elephant’s head handle constructed in two sections. Measuring 33 inches in length, this elegant cane would have made an impressive accessory when carried as a gentleman’s walking-out cane.

This example is believed to have been carried by an Afrika Korps officer during the North African Campaign. While no individual provenance accompanies the cane, we previously owned an almost identical example over twenty years ago, identified as an Afrika Korps officer’s walking-out cane. This cane was acquired as part of a long-held collection of Afrika Korps memorabilia, some of which is already listed, with further items to follow.

The Malacca shaft has developed a lovely aged patina, while the silvered elephant’s head handle remains an eye-catching feature, reflecting the association with Africa that made this style particularly appropriate for officers serving in the theatre.

Whether purchased for its military association, quality craftsmanship or decorative appeal, this is a handsome and unusual period walking cane that would make an excellent addition to any collection of Second World War militaria, colonial memorabilia or antique canes.

Condition:
Very good original condition, with honest age-related wear consistent with use. The Malacca shaft is straight and sound, and the silvered elephant’s head handle displays an attractive aged finish.

Overall Length: 33 inches (84 cm approximately).

Please Note: The attribution to Afrika Korps use is based on its provenance within a long-established collection and comparison with a similar example previously owned. As with many privately purchased officer’s items, no wartime markings are present to definitively confirm military issue. Comparable Malacca canes were widely produced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and remained popular as gentleman’s walking canes.
