Historical Context

The 40mm Bofors anti-aircraft gun was one of the most effective and widely used Allied anti-aircraft weapons of the Second World War, serving with British forces on land and at sea. Ammunition for these guns was produced and filled at numerous Royal Ordnance Factories across Britain.

ROF Perry & Sutton, established in 1940, became one of Britain’s major ammunition manufacturing centres, while ROF  was one of the largest wartime filling factories, employing thousands of workers in support of the war effort.
