WWII German WNF Werkschutz Armband – Wiener Neustädter Flugzeugwerke – Messerschmitt Aircraft Factory Security
German WWII Aircraft Factory Police / Security Armband – WNF
A very interesting and increasingly desirable piece of Second World War German industrial and Luftwaffe-related history — an original WNF Werkschutz armband, associated with the security personnel responsible for protecting an important German aircraft manufacturing facility.
The initials WNF refer to Wiener Neustädter Flugzeugwerke GmbH, the major aircraft manufacturer based at Wiener Neustadt in Austria, then part of the German Reich. The company became an important Messerschmitt production facility and manufactured thousands of Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighter aircraft during the Second World War.
WNF – Wiener Neustädter Flugzeugwerke
Following the incorporation of Austria into the German Reich in 1938, the Wiener Neustädter Flugzeugwerke were greatly expanded and became one of the most important aircraft factories in German-controlled Europe.
Production of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 began at WNF in 1939, and by the end of the war the works had produced approximately 8,545 Bf 109 fighters, making it one of the principal manufacturers of Germany’s standard fighter aircraft.
The factory became a major target for Allied bombing, with the Wiener Neustadt works suffering repeated attacks during the later stages of the war. Production was subsequently dispersed to other locations.
Werkschutz – Factory Protection
The term Werkschutz literally translates as “factory protection” and referred to industrial security personnel responsible for protecting important factories and armaments installations.
At wartime aircraft and armaments plants, Werkschutz personnel could be responsible for guarding factory premises, controlling access, protecting industrial installations and maintaining security within the works. Historical research into German wartime armaments production confirms the important role played by factory security personnel in protecting aircraft manufacturing facilities.
This makes the armband particularly interesting as a piece of home-front German industrial militaria, rather than conventional Wehrmacht field equipment.
A Fantastic Piece of German Aviation History
The association with WNF / Wiener Neustädter Flugzeugwerke gives this armband an especially strong connection with German aviation history.
WNF was one of the principal manufacturers of the Messerschmitt Bf 109, with production at Wiener Neustadt accounting for a substantial proportion of the aircraft manufactured during the war.
A WNF Werkschutz armband therefore represents the people and infrastructure behind Germany’s wartime aircraft production — the factories, workers and security personnel who kept these huge industrial complexes operating.
