An interesting original aircraft relic from the German Focke-Wulf Fw 189 Uhu, one of the Luftwaffe’s most distinctive reconnaissance aircraft of the Second World War.

Historical Background
The Focke-Wulf Fw 189, nicknamed the Uhu (Eagle Owl), was a German twin-engine reconnaissance and observation aircraft. Its distinctive twin-boom configuration, central glazed crew nacelle and excellent all-round visibility made it particularly effective in its intended role.
Introduced into Luftwaffe service in 1940, the Fw 189 was widely used on the Eastern Front, where it performed tactical reconnaissance, artillery observation and battlefield surveillance missions. Its unusual appearance earned it a reputation as one of the most recognisable German reconnaissance aircraft of the war.
The aircraft normally carried a crew of three, although configurations varied according to role and equipment.
Bordeaux-Mérignac and Fw 189 Production
Bordeaux-Mérignac became an important centre of German aircraft production during the occupation of France. The Bordeaux aircraft industry was involved in the manufacture and assembly of German aircraft, including the Fw 189.
The recovery location is therefore of particular historical interest, connecting this component with the industrial infrastructure that supported the Luftwaffe during the Second World War.
The Rear Tail Wheel Section
The relic represents part of the aircraft’s rear tail wheel assembly. Components of this type formed part of the aircraft’s landing gear arrangement, supporting the rear of the aircraft during ground handling, taxiing and landing.
Its reported recovery from Bordeaux-Mérignac in 2010 gives the piece an interesting connection to wartime German aircraft production in occupied France.
