WWII German Boxed Erika Typewriter by Seidel & Naumann – Working Order –
A very nice original Second World War German boxed Erika portable typewriter, manufactured by the famous Seidel & Naumann AG of Dresden, one of Germany’s most respected engineering companies and the country’s largest producer of portable typewriters during the pre-war and wartime years. The Erika portable range, first introduced in 1910, became renowned for its quality, reliability and compact design, making it one of the most successful portable typewriters ever produced in Germany.
This example is presented in clean overall condition and is supplied in its original wooden transit case. The carrying handle is missing, but the case remains sound and continues to protect the machine well.
The typewriter itself is complete with all keys present and remains in good working order, making it an excellent display piece that can still be used today. It retains the classic green enamel finish which has crazed, with nickel-plated fittings and the distinctive Erika styling that made these machines popular with businesses, government offices and private owners throughout Germany during the 1930s and 1940s.
During the Second World War, portable typewriters such as the Erika were widely used by military headquarters, administrative offices, staff officers and war correspondents for preparing reports, operational orders, correspondence and official documentation. Their robust construction and dependable mechanism ensured they were equally at home in headquarters buildings as they were in field offices throughout occupied Europe.
Today, original wartime Erika typewriters remain highly sought after by collectors of German militaria, office antiques and vintage writing equipment. Complete, working examples in their original carrying cases are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
