WW2 Rolls-Royce Merlin Cylinder Head Assembly – Saxony, Germany – Possible RAF Lancaster Connection
An interesting and substantial piece of Second World War aviation engineering, this Merlin cylinder head assembly was recovered in Saxony, Germany. It is believed to be associated with the wartime aircraft wreckage found in the region, with a possible connection to an RAF Lancaster bomber lost during the final stages of the war in 1944–45.

Aviation Relic | Second World War | Late-War Germany | Possible RAF Bomber Command History
The component features the characteristic construction of a large aircraft engine assembly, with an alloy head and associated cylinder components. Visible markings include the casting number 29065 and a stamped marking that appears to read K87307. These details may assist further research into the component’s precise manufacturer and engine variant.
The Rolls-Royce Merlin and RAF Bomber Command
The Rolls-Royce Merlin was one of the most important aero engines of the Second World War. Its V12 design powered numerous Allied aircraft, including the Supermarine Spitfire, Hawker Hurricane, de Havilland Mosquito and Avro Lancaster.
Lancaster bombers played a major role in RAF Bomber Command’s night offensive against Germany. During the final months of the war, aircraft were lost over German territory through enemy action, mechanical failure and other operational circumstances.
Lancaster Mk III aircraft were powered by Packard-built Merlin engines manufactured in the United States under licence. This makes a Packard Merlin connection a possibility worth investigating, although the precise engine type and manufacturer of this particular assembly have not yet been confirmed.
Recovered in Saxony, Germany
The assembly is reported to have been recovered in Saxony, in eastern Germany. The region and the wider German theatre saw extensive Allied air operations during the later stages of the war.
A connection to a Lancaster lost in the area during 1944–45 remains a possibility rather than a confirmed identification. No specific aircraft serial number, crew or crash date has yet been established from the component markings.
An Interesting Collectable Aviation Relic
A substantial and evocative piece of wartime aircraft engineering, this assembly would make an interesting addition to a collection of RAF aviation relics, Merlin engine components or Second World War aircraft history.
Its combination of surviving mechanical detail, visible markings and reported recovery in Germany offers scope for further research into its origins.
