WW2 RAF Flying Helmet Loom Jack Plug – A.M. Extension Connector Cable & Plug – Original RAF Aviation Equipment
An original Second World War pattern Royal Air Force flying helmet Loom jack plug, complete with its associated A.M. extension connector cable and plug.
This is an interesting piece of wartime RAF aviation equipment, forming part of the communications system used by aircrew when operating aircraft during the Second World War.
The connector was designed for use with RAF flying helmet communications equipment, allowing the aircrew’s headset to be connected into the aircraft’s intercom and radio system.
The Loom-type jack connection formed part of the electrical arrangement linking the flying helmet and microphone equipment with the aircraft’s communication installation.
Historical Background
During the Second World War, effective communication between aircrew was essential, particularly in multi-crew aircraft such as the Avro Lancaster, Handley Page Halifax, Wellington and other operational types.
RAF flying helmets were fitted with internal earphones and associated electrical connections, enabling pilots and crew members to communicate with one another and receive radio transmissions.
Specialist plugs, extension leads and connectors formed an important part of this equipment, allowing flying helmets to be connected to the aircraft’s electrical communication system.
These seemingly small components were essential to the operation of wartime aircraft, helping aircrew maintain communication during operational sorties.
