Original German M40 Stahlhelm with Remains of Winter Snow Camouflage

A very interesting original WWII German M40 Stahlhelm, retaining remains of its original winter snow camouflage, with a strong battlefield provenance from the Ardennes region of Belgium.

This is a genuine wartime M40 German combat helmet, retaining its original factory paintwork together with surviving traces of the white/snow camouflage applied for winter operations.

The helmet was acquired as part of a collection of German WWII items obtained directly from the Foy-Notre-Dame area of Belgium, an area with strong associations with the Battle of the Bulge / Ardennes Offensive of December 1944 – January 1945.

The present owner has recently returned from Foy-Notre-Dame and stayed at Le Vieux Marronnier in Foy-Notre-Dame, acquiring this helmet along with a collection of other WWII German items from the area.

Winter Camouflage

One of the most attractive features of this helmet is the surviving snow camouflage, particularly visible across the upper portion and one side of the shell.

German troops operating during the winter fighting in the Ardennes commonly used temporary white winter camouflage on their helmets and equipment. This could be applied over the standard factory finish and was often intended to provide concealment against snow-covered terrain.

Much of the white finish has naturally disappeared over the decades, leaving attractive remnants which provide clear evidence of its wartime use.

Original M40 Shell & Decal

The helmet retains its original wartime paint finish, with areas of the original German factory coating remaining beneath the surviving camouflage.

There are also remains of the original decal on one side of the helmet, adding further interest to the piece.

Despite damage to the shell, the helmet remains a good, solid example and retains excellent character associated with its battlefield history.

Foy-Notre-Dame & The Ardennes Offensive

Foy-Notre-Dame lies in the Belgian Ardennes, close to Dinant, and was caught up in the German offensive of December 1944.

The Battle of the Bulge was the last major German offensive on the Western Front. German forces attacked through the Ardennes in an attempt to break through the Allied lines, resulting in some of the fiercest winter fighting of the entire Second World War.

The surviving snow camouflage on this helmet is particularly appropriate to this history, representing the winter conditions in which German soldiers fought throughout the Ardennes campaign.

Condition

The helmet is in battlefield/relic condition with damage, but remains a solid and displayable M40 shell.

A very interesting WWII German M40 winter camouflage helmet, particularly desirable because of its Ardennes provenance and surviving snow camouflage.

The combination of the original M40 shell, remnants of its winter finish, remaining decal and connection to Foy-Notre-Dame makes this an excellent piece for a collection of Battle of the Bulge, Ardennes Offensive, German Stahlhelm and WWII battlefield relics.
