Historical Context – The British 13-Pounder Gun

The Ordnance QF 13-pounder was introduced in the early 20th century and became the standard field gun of the Royal Horse Artillery at the outbreak of World War I.

Designed for mobility and rapid deployment in support of cavalry units, the gun fired a lighter shell than the larger 18-pounder but could be brought quickly into action on the battlefield.

Although gradually replaced by heavier artillery as the war progressed, the 13-Pounder remained an important part of British artillery during the conflict. A shell case dated 1918 reflects wartime production during the closing stages of the First World War.
