‘Spanish’ Morion / Cabasset – North Italian, Late 16th Century

A rare and highly evocative North Italian Morion or Cabasset, dating to the late 16th century, representing a classic form of European infantry helmet from the Renaissance period.

Forged in one piece of russet iron, the helmet displays an elegant almond-shaped skull rising to a short flattened stalk, a distinctive feature associated with cabasset forms. The base of the skull is encircled by a series of lining rivets set on embossed brass washers , a typical construction detail of the period.

The helmet is fitted with a downturned brim with a turned edge, struck with a maker’s or workshop mark, and retains an attractive, untouched surface with areas of russet patination and light corrosion, consistent with age and use.

The mark possibly represents the arms of the Barberini family under a coronet and is found on a large group of ‘Spanish’ morions from the old Papal armoury, now in the Museo Storico Vaticano in the Lateran Palace, Rome

Condition:
Good antique condition. The surface shows honest age-related wear, including areas of rust patination and minor pitting.  Overall, the helmet remains structurally sound with strong visual presence.

Historical Context:
Morions and cabassets were widely used across Europe during the 16th century, particularly by infantry in the emerging “pike and shot” formations. Originating in Spain but produced extensively in Italy, these helmets became iconic symbols of Renaissance warfare and exploration.

North Italian examples, such as this, are especially valued for their craftsmanship and association with important armour-producing centres. Comparable examples are recorded in major collections and auction houses, often featuring similar one-piece construction, riveted skull bases, and narrow brims.
