RMS Arlanza Pewter Mug – Original Royal Mail Steam Packet Company Ocean Liner Memorabilia – WW1 Armed Merchant Cruiser Interest

An attractive and increasingly scarce original pewter drinking mug from the famous RMS Arlanza, one of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company’s prestigious South American liners.

RMS Arlanza was a magnificent 14,622 GRT ocean liner built by Harland & Wolff of Belfast and launched in 1911 before entering service in 1912. Designed for the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company’s luxury route between Southampton and South America, she represented the golden age of British ocean travel, carrying passengers, mail and cargo in comfort across the Atlantic. During the First World War she was requisitioned by the Admiralty and served as HMS Arlanza, an Armed Merchant Cruiser from 1915 until 1920, before returning to civilian service. After over two decades of distinguished service she was finally retired and broken up in 1938.

This original pewter mug would have been possibly used aboard the vessel and is a wonderful survivor from one of Britain’s best-known pre-war ocean liners. Maritime artefacts from Royal Mail Steam Packet Company vessels are becoming increasingly sought after, particularly those connected with ships that also served during the First World War.

The mug displays an attractive period appearance some damage to the base (see photo’s) but it has an honest age-related wear and patina consistent with its age and service. It would make an excellent display piece within any collection of ocean liner memorabilia, Royal Mail Steam Packet Company artefacts, merchant navy history or First World War naval collectibles.

A fascinating survivor from a ship that witnessed both the elegance of Edwardian ocean travel and the demands of wartime naval service.
