An evocative First World War German military relic, this Mauser Gewehr 98 (Gewehr 98 / Gew. 98) rifle was recovered from the Somme area of northern France in 2020.
The rifle is presented mounted on a wooden display board, making an impressive historical display piece for collectors of Imperial German militaria, First World War firearms and battlefield relics.
Historical Background
The Mauser Gewehr 98 was the standard service rifle of the Imperial German Army during the First World War. Introduced in 1898, it was a bolt-action rifle chambered for the 7.92 × 57mm Mauser cartridge and became one of the most recognisable German infantry weapons of the conflict.
Reliable and robust, the Gewehr 98 was carried by German infantry throughout the war, including during the fierce fighting on the Western Front.
The Somme region of northern France witnessed some of the most intense fighting of the First World War. The 1916 Battle of the Somme and subsequent operations left extensive battlefield remains across the area, where military equipment and personal effects continue to be discovered.
