Relic German GrZ 04 Artillery shell fuse 1914

German GrZ 04 Artillery shell fuze 1914 modification 45mm percussion fuze- detonator, double effect with delay or without. for High explosive shells. Recovered from Ypres Battlefield of 1914-1918 in Belgium.

Brass or zinc alloy fuze, with steel cap and gaine. The GR Z 04 was an evolution of the Gr Z 96/04 fuze, including as this latter :

  • a selectable optional delay (approximately 1 second) based on two identical parallel graze percussion systems designed on a cylindrical graze pellet bearing a starter and a static percussion pin transverse bridge, one directly connected to the detonator, and the other one through a compressed gunpowder pellet delay,
  • a graze arming system based on an axial and massive mobile graze pellet bearing a starter, a percussion pin protected by a tulip spring cap, and two big compressed gunpowder pellets blocking the percussion systems, inspired from the ‘Dopp Z 92’ fuze, and secured by a two rods safety pin,
  • an evolution of the exploder safety masking at rest the primer into an isolated detonation room, but with a static primer and a mobile detonator charge.
