An original and increasingly scarce pair of Imperial German First World War flying goggles, dating to approximately 1915, and bearing the D.R.G.M. (Deutsches Reichsgebrauchsmuster) mark, indicating protection under the German Imperial utility model patent system. The D.R.G.M. system was widely used for innovative designs and practical inventions in Imperial Germany. Recovered from Arras area.
A particularly unusual feature of this pair is the presence of hinged tinted anti-glare shields, designed to be lowered over the main lenses to reduce glare and improve visibility for early military aviators operating in open cockpits. Such specialist features are rarely encountered and add significantly to the display appeal of the goggles. Early German flying goggles of this type were produced during the pioneering years of military aviation and are highly sought after by collectors of aviation and Imperial German militaria.
The goggles are offered in recovered condition. One of the original tinted anti-glare shields is missing, and there is age-related wear consistent with over a century of existence. They have been attractively mounted within a display frame, making them ready for exhibition.
