An exceptionally interesting and well-documented Royal Air Force archive belonging to Pilot Officer R.G. Cruikshank, comprising his original RAF Flying Log Book together with a contemporary Flying Training Manual, dating from 1928–1929 during his period of instruction at No. 5 Flying Training School (5 F.T.S.), RAF Sealand, Flintshire, North Wales.

This is an excellent inter-war RAF grouping that records the formative flying career of an officer who would later continue his service throughout the Second World War.

The flying log book documents Cruikshank’s early pilot training, recording instructional flights, flying hours, aircraft types and progress through one of the Royal Air Force’s principal flying schools during the late 1920s. Flying down to Cranley etc. These records provide a fascinating insight into RAF pilot training during the years between the First and Second World Wars, when the service was developing the professional standards that would later prove vital during the Battle of Britain and the wider air war.

Included with the log book is his original Flying Training Manual, an invaluable companion volume used during pilot instruction. Together, the two items form an attractive and increasingly scarce RAF training archive.

Research shows that R.G. Cruikshank later served as a Flying Officer in the Royal Air Force. By 1941, he was serving with the Central Flying School (CFS) as a Flight Trainer, helping to instruct and prepare new generations of RAF pilots during Britain’s wartime expansion. He also served within the Special Duties Branch, further adding to the historical interest of this officer’s career.

Historical Background

No. 5 Flying Training School, based at RAF Sealand in North Wales, was one of the RAF’s principal establishments for advanced pilot training during the inter-war period. Hundreds of pilots passed through its gates before going on to serve across the Empire and, later, in the Second World War.

The Central Flying School (CFS) occupied a unique position within the Royal Air Force. Established to develop and maintain the highest standards of flying instruction, it trained the instructors who, in turn, trained RAF pilots. Officers serving with the CFS played a crucial role in maintaining the quality of Britain’s wartime aircrew and contributed directly to the success of RAF operations throughout the conflict.

Condition

Both the flying log book and flying training manual display honest age and service wear consistent with use. The log book retains its original entries and remains an excellent research document, while the manual complements the archive perfectly. Overall, the group presents very well and would make a superb addition to any RAF, aviation or military history collection.
