An original Second World War German Administrative Personnel Officer’s visor cap, recovered from the former headquarters of Feldkommandantur 722 in Saint-Lô, Normandy, during the aftermath of the fighting in 1944.

This genuine wartime visor cap belonged to an officer serving within the German Military Administration (Militärverwaltung), the organisation responsible for administering occupied territories throughout Western Europe. Officers of this branch oversaw civil administration, transport, requisions, documentation, labour control and liaison with local authorities rather than serving as front-line combat troops.

The cap displays the classic dark green wool body with traditional administrative green piping, silver officer’s chin cord, national eagle and cockade. It remains an evocative relic and it’s condition shows it , from one of the most significant campaigns of the Second World War.

Historical Background

Following the occupation of France in 1940, the German Army established Feldkommandantur 722 in Saint-Lô, where it administered the Manche region of Normandy. The headquarters coordinated military government, transport, supplies, security and civil administration until July 1944, when Allied forces liberated the town during the Normandy Campaign.

Recovered from this historic headquarters, the cap represents a tangible link to the German occupation of France and the dramatic events surrounding the liberation of Normandy.
