Original WWII British Military Intelligence Photograph – Captured German 38cm Railway Gun – Intelligence Reference No. 89984 – 7 x 5 Inches

An original Second World War black and white British Military Intelligence photograph depicting a captured German 38cm railway gun, complete with its British intelligence indexing number “89984” clearly visible on the railway wagon. Measuring approximately 7 x 5 inches, this authentic wartime photograph records one of Germany’s largest heavy artillery weapons following its capture by Allied forces.

The image shows the enormous 38cm railway gun mounted on its specially constructed rail carriage, with two British soldiers (“Tommies”) standing on the gun platform, providing an excellent sense of the immense scale of this formidable weapon. The presence of the prominently displayed intelligence reference number confirms that the photograph formed part of the British Army’s wartime intelligence documentation of captured German military equipment.

Throughout the closing stages of the Second World War, British and Allied intelligence teams systematically photographed, measured and catalogued captured enemy weapons, vehicles and installations. Each photograph was assigned a unique reference number, enabling technical specialists to analyse German engineering, assess military capabilities and compile detailed intelligence reports for future reference.

The 38cm railway guns represented some of the largest artillery pieces fielded by the Wehrmacht. Mounted on specially designed railway transporters, these massive guns were capable of firing extremely heavy shells over vast distances against coastal fortifications, strategic installations and defended positions. Their sheer size made them amongst the most impressive artillery weapons of the Second World War.
