German M42 Stahlhelm Relic – Halbe Pocket Recovery – Battle of Berlin 1945

This authentic relic helmet was recovered from the area where the German 9th Army became encircled during the Battle of Halbe, fought between 24 April and 1 May 1945. In a desperate attempt to break out westwards and avoid Soviet captivity, thousands of German soldiers fought through the forests around Halbe in some of the bloodiest fighting of the Battle of Berlin. The Ninth Army was effectively destroyed as a fighting force, with heavy losses on both sides.

An original German M42 Stahlhelm battlefield relic, recovered from a lake near the Halbe Pocket, one of the most tragic and fiercely contested battlefields of the final weeks of the Second World War.

The helmet has spent many years submerged in a lake, resulting in a dark blackened patina with areas of surface corrosion that give it an exceptional battlefield appearance. Despite its time underwater, the shell remains reasonably solid, retaining its original form with no major structural collapse.

Of particular interest, the helmet still retains a small section of its original metal liner band, a feature often absent on recovered examples. Following recovery, the shell has been lightly oiled for long-term preservation, helping to stabilise the surface while retaining its untouched relic character.

Historical Background

The Halbe Pocket was one of the last major engagements fought by the German Army during the Second World War. Encircled south-east of Berlin, approximately 80,000 troops of General Theodor Busse’s Ninth Army attempted to break through successive Soviet defensive lines to reach the German Twelfth Army and ultimately surrender to the Western Allies. The fighting through the forests around Halbe resulted in enormous casualties and remains one of the most devastating episodes of the Battle of Berlin.
