The image clearly shows extensive bomb damage throughout the Krupp works. Visible within the photograph are the distinctive long sawtooth-roof engineering workshops, a prominent circular storage tank, and the extensive railway network serving the factory complex. Numerous workshops and production sheds display severe structural damage, with collapsed roofs, shattered buildings and large areas of destruction clearly identifiable across the site.

Historical Background

The Krupp Works at Essen formed the industrial heart of Germany’s heavy armaments production during the Second World War. The vast complex manufactured artillery pieces, tanks, naval guns, armour plate, ammunition and countless other military products essential to the German war effort.

During July 1943, RAF Bomber Command launched a series of heavy attacks against Essen as part of the Allied Combined Bomber Offensive. The raids sought to cripple German industrial production by targeting factories, transport infrastructure and engineering facilities supplying the Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe.

Following each major raid, specially equipped RAF reconnaissance aircraft photographed the target area. These images were analysed by photographic interpreters who mapped bomb strikes, measured structural damage and assessed the reduction in industrial output. Such reconnaissance photographs played a vital role in planning subsequent operations and remain some of the most important visual records of the strategic bombing campaign.
