Original Imperial German WW1 M16 Stahlhelm Relic – Arras Battlefield Recovery – Western Front Helmet

An original Imperial German M16 Stahlhelm relic helmet shell, recovered from the Arras region of northern France in 2010, one of the most fiercely contested sectors of the Western Front during the First World War.

The helmet is a genuine battlefield recovery and displays extensive age-related deterioration from prolonged burial. The shell retains its distinctive M16 profile but exhibits significant corrosion, rust perforation, and apparent battle or shrapnel-related damage around the skirt. The crown of the helmet has several rust holes and losses, giving it an evocative “as found” appearance.

Historical Background

The Arras sector saw continuous fighting throughout much of the war and was the scene of major offensives, most notably the Battle of Arras in 1917. The area witnessed intense artillery bombardments, trench warfare, and heavy casualties on both sides, leaving a rich archaeological legacy of battlefield relics.
