Original Gloster Meteor Martin-Baker Cockpit Seat Back – Air Ministry Marked – RAF Jet Fighter Relic
A rare and highly desirable original cockpit seat back from a Gloster Meteor, fitted with an early Martin-Baker ejection seat. Retaining its original black leather cushioned front, distinctive blue fabric backing, and Air Ministry markings to the interior, this is an authentic surviving component from one of Britain’s pioneering jet fighters.
The seat back is constructed with a heavily padded leather face designed to provide comfort and support for the pilot or navigator during flight, while the reverse retains its original blue fabric covering, typical of hidden upholstery used in early RAF aircraft. Internally, the piece bears Air Ministry markings, confirming its military service origin and adding significantly to its historical interest.
The Gloster Meteor entered RAF service in 1944 as Britain’s first operational jet fighter and remained in front-line use well into the 1950s. Later variants, including the Meteor F.8 and two-seat Meteor T.7, were equipped with the pioneering Martin-Baker Mk.1 and Mk.2 ejection seats, marking a major advance in pilot safety. The Meteor became the first operational RAF aircraft to use Martin-Baker ejection seats, technology that would go on to save thousands of lives worldwide.
This seat back represents an increasingly scarce surviving component from the early jet age and offers collectors an opportunity to own an original piece of one of the RAF’s most historically important aircraft.

Historical Significance
The Gloster Meteor was Britain’s first operational jet fighter and played a pivotal role in the development of post-war military aviation. From the late 1940s, Martin-Baker ejection seats became standard equipment in many Meteor variants, representing one of the most important advances in aircrew safety. The success of these early seats led to Martin-Baker becoming the world’s leading manufacturer of ejection systems, with the Meteor serving as one of the first aircraft to prove the concept in operational service.
Today, original Martin-Baker seat components with Air Ministry markings are seldom encountered on the collectors’ market. Their association with Britain’s first generation of jet aircraft makes them highly desirable artefacts of early Cold War and RAF aviation history.
A rare and authentic RAF cockpit relic from the pioneering era of British jet aviation, combining excellent provenance, original Air Ministry markings and direct association with the iconic Gloster Meteor and Martin-Baker ejection seat.
