Original Czechoslovak VZ-24 Mauser Bayonet – Pre-WWII Production – Brno Manufacture

An original Czechoslovak VZ-24 bayonet, manufactured by Československá zbrojovka a.s., Brno, for use with the 8mm VZ-24 Mauser rifle.

The VZ-24 bayonet represents an important piece of Czechoslovak military history and is typical of pre-war production, dating from the period when Czechoslovakia was developing and exporting its own military equipment.

Historical Background

The VZ-24 bayonet was developed alongside the VZ-24 rifle, following feedback from the Czechoslovak cavalry, who considered the earlier VZ-23 rifle and bayonet unsuitable for cavalry service.

Modifications were consequently introduced, including a shorter bayonet blade. The resulting VZ-24 bayonet featured a blade measuring approximately 300mm and became the standard pattern associated with the Czechoslovak VZ-24 rifle.

Designed primarily for the VZ-24, the bayonet was also compatible with the earlier VZ-23 rifle.

Wartime Service and International Use

The VZ-24 rifle and bayonet enjoyed considerable international success, being exported widely both before and after the Second World War.

Their history extends well beyond Czechoslovakia itself:

Czechoslovak Army: Standard military equipment during the pre-war period.

Spanish Civil War: VZ-24 rifles and bayonets saw service with the Republican Popular Army.

German Army: Following the occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1939, Germany took over substantial stocks of Czech military equipment and made extensive use of modified VZ-24 pattern bayonets during WWII.

International Export: The VZ-24 pattern became widely distributed through Czechoslovak arms exports.
