Printed within are important British military locations together with emergency telephone numbers and information posts used by occupying forces.
The reverse contains spaces for soldiers to record important addresses and telephone numbers, with several period pencil annotations still present, adding to its authenticity and historical interest.
Historical Background
Following Germany’s surrender in May 1945, Berlin was divided into four occupation sectors administered by Britain, the United States, France and the Soviet Union.
The British Sector included districts such as Spandau, famous for Spandau Prison, where leading Nazi war criminals—including Rudolf Hess—were imprisoned following the Nuremberg Trials.
British military personnel required practical guides such as this to navigate the devastated city, locate military headquarters, police stations, hospitals, fire services and government offices during the difficult years of reconstruction.
The map lists important British administrative locations including:
Headquarters British Troops Berlin
Headquarters Military Government
Control Commission for Germany (British Element)
British General Hospital
Corps of Military Police Headquarters
Fire and emergency services
Telephone contact information
These small information maps were working documents issued for everyday use and were often discarded after service, making surviving examples increasingly difficult to find.
