The Battle of Crete, codenamed Operation Merkur (Mercury), marked the world’s first large-scale airborne invasion. On 20 May 1941, thousands of elite German Fallschirmjäger descended by parachute and glider onto the island in an attempt to capture the strategically important airfields and ports defended by British, Commonwealth, Greek and Cretan forces. Although the Germans ultimately secured the island, they suffered such severe casualties that Adolf Hitler ordered there would be no further major airborne invasions using parachute troops.
