Original 1945 War Office Booklet – Inspection, Maintenance and Care of ‘B’ Vehicles – British Army
An original War Office training booklet, titled “Inspection, Maintenance and Care of ‘B’ Vehicles”, published in April 1945 for the British Army. Produced during the closing months of the Second World War, this practical handbook was issued to officers, NCOs and transport personnel responsible for the inspection, maintenance and efficient operation of military wheeled vehicles. The publication formed part of the Army’s task system for preventative vehicle maintenance and was intended to be carried and used in the field.
This example is well used, displaying the dirt, wear and handling expected of a booklet that has clearly seen service. Such signs of use only enhance its authenticity and character, reflecting its original purpose as a working military manual rather than a publication kept in storage.
During the Second World War, the term ‘B’ Vehicles referred to the British Army’s vast fleet of soft-skinned transport, including staff cars, motorcycles, utility vehicles, ambulances, lorries and general service trucks. Keeping these vehicles operational was essential to maintaining supplies, troop movements and front-line logistics throughout the war. The booklet provides concise guidance on routine inspections, preventative maintenance and the correct care of Army transport to maximise reliability under demanding operational conditions.
Increasingly difficult to find, especially in genuinely used condition, this booklet is an excellent addition to any collection of British Army, military transport or Second World War memorabilia.
