A rare original French Border Guards tunic dating from the 1930s, representing the uniform worn by French border personnel in the years leading up to and during the Second World War.

This distinctive tunic retains a number of attractive original features, including its fully buttoned front, flaming bomb design buttons, insignia to the lapels and rank stripes positioned at the edges of the cuffs.

The tunic has a cloth main lining and silk-lined sleeves, with original metal belt loops still present. Although the belt is no longer with the tunic, the surviving details make this an interesting example of French uniform design from the pre-war period.

French Border Guards – Historical Background

During the 1930s, France maintained border and customs personnel responsible for monitoring its frontiers and enforcing national regulations. These services formed part of the wider system of border control in place during a period of increasing political tension across Europe.

Following the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, French border personnel continued their duties during the Drôle de Guerre (Phoney War). The German invasion of France in May 1940 brought a dramatic change to the country’s military and political situation.

Uniforms from this period are of particular interest to collectors of French militaria, interwar military history and the early years of WWII.
