Historical Background

Werknummer 1715, coded G1+MS, was a Heinkel He 111P-2 serving with 8./Kampfgeschwader 55 “Greif” during the Battle of Britain.

On the evening of 8 October 1940, the aircraft took off from Villacoublay, France, as part of a raid against RAF Thorney Island on England’s south coast. During the operation it was hit by British anti-aircraft fire and crashed at Stansted Park near Rowlands Castle, Hampshire, at approximately 7:30 p.m. All five members of the crew lost their lives.

The Heinkel He 111

Designed during the 1930s by the Heinkel Aircraft Company, the He 111 became the Luftwaffe’s principal medium bomber during the early years of the Second World War. It served extensively during the invasions of Poland, France and the Low Countries before becoming one of the best-known German bombers of the Battle of Britain.

Powered by twin Daimler-Benz engines, the aircraft combined long range with a substantial bomb load and was instantly recognisable by its distinctive glazed nose.
