The Story of Hurricane P3536

Hawker Hurricane P3536 served with No. 17 Squadron RAF, operating from RAF Debden during the height of the Battle of Britain.

On the afternoon of 13 October 1940, while engaged in combat with German aircraft over Kent, Pilot Officer J. K. Ross was attacked during an intense aerial engagement. His Hurricane sustained severe damage and crashed near Rochester, Kent, at approximately 1:50 pm.

Pilot Officer Ross successfully escaped the stricken aircraft, surviving the incident, while Hurricane P3536 was destroyed.

Today, recovered fragments from identified Battle of Britain aircraft are becoming increasingly scarce, making displays such as this highly desirable among aviation historians and collectors.

No. 17 Squadron RAF

No. 17 Squadron was one of the Royal Air Force’s distinguished fighter squadrons and played a significant role during the Battle of Britain. Flying the rugged Hawker Hurricane, its pilots defended south-east England against repeated Luftwaffe attacks during the summer and autumn of 1940.

Although often overshadowed by the Spitfire, the Hurricane accounted for the majority of enemy aircraft destroyed during the Battle of Britain and formed the backbone of RAF Fighter Command throughout the campaign.
