The 4th Battalion, Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders (often shortened to 4th Camerons) was a Territorial Force unit. They played a critical and historically significant role on the Western Front in the early years of the Great War, most notably launching a famous Highland charge at the Battle of Festubert.
Mobilization & Training: Formed in Inverness at the outbreak of the war in August 1914. Like many other Highland units, they initially concentrated at Bedford for training before shipping off to France.
The Battle of Festubert (1915): This was their defining and bloodiest engagement. On the evening of May 17, 1915, they charged across 800 yards of open, ditch-intersected ground and successfully took a German position known as the Southern Breastwork against all odds. They were forced to retreat at 3:00 AM after suffering catastrophic casualties, losing more than 250 men.
Due to the heavy toll of constant trench warfare (including battles at Neuve Chapelle and Loos), the 4th Battalion was disbanded in early 1916. The men were largely absorbed into the 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
