B17, Turbocharger from Heavenly Body 11, RELIC

B17 Turbocharger unit in Relic condition , This item was recovered from the sea and is from the crashed Flying Fortress that collided with another and came down at Canvey point.
On the 19th June 1944 at about 18:20 hrs a formation of B17 Flying Fortress bombers was approaching Leigh-on-sea a few miles off the east of Canvey Point. The formation was returning from a bombing mission over France to attack a V-1 rocket site which was causing a problem to London and the suburbs and post -incident pilot reports confirm that some of the aircraft were damaged due to enemy fire.
As the formation crossed the Thames B17, 44-6133 veered downwards and collided with B17, 42-97942 nicknamed Heavenly Body 11 , both aircraft fell away from each other towards the ground , one fell on the Kent side and this one eventually came down nose first into the mud . A total of 11 young men lost their lives from both aircraft’s. 6 men from the Heavenly Body 11 survived. This item came from a collection in north Essex and before from Blake Hall Museum.
