Antique C.1915 RFC WWI Military Aircraft Pilot’s Black Dial Pocket Watch – 30-Hour Octavia Luminous Cockpit Navigator Watch – 15 Jewels – U.S.A.P. No. 816321 – Working
A Rare First World War Aviation Timepiece from the Dawn of Military Flight

An exceptional and increasingly scarce First World War military, aviation pocket watch, dating to circa 1915, manufactured by Octavia and fitted with a reliable 15-jewel movement. Finished with a striking black military dial, luminous numerals and hands, this handsome watch represents the type of navigation timepiece carried by pilots and observers during the pioneering years of military aviation.

Unlike many surviving examples, this watch is in excellent working order, keeping good time and retaining its original military character. The movement is stamped U.S.A.P. No. 816321, adding further interest for collectors of early military horology.

Designed for the Cockpit

During the First World War, accurate timekeeping was essential for aerial navigation. Before the widespread introduction of wristwatches, many aviators relied upon robust pocket watches that could be easily consulted during flight.

Early pilots of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) often carried pocket watches secured inside their flying clothing, using them to calculate flight times, fuel endurance and navigation by map and compass. Black dials with luminous numerals provided excellent visibility in poor weather, at dawn and dusk, or inside the often dimly lit cockpits of early military aircraft.

These watches accompanied pilots flying famous aircraft such as the:

Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2
Royal Aircraft Factory R.E.8
Airco DH.2
Airco DH.4
Sopwith Pup
Sopwith Camel
Bristol F.2B Fighter
The Royal Flying Corps

Established in 1912, the Royal Flying Corps became Britain’s pioneering military air arm. Flying over the battlefields of France and Belgium, RFC airmen carried out reconnaissance, artillery observation, aerial photography and fighter patrols under extremely hazardous conditions.

Reliable timepieces such as this formed an essential part of an aviator’s flying equipment, long before sophisticated cockpit instruments became standard.

Following the end of the war, the RFC merged with the Royal Naval Air Service in 1918 to create the Royal Air Force, the world’s first independent air force.
