19th Century Engraved Percussion Cap Pocket Pistol with Walnut Grip
A fine and original mid 19th Century percussion cap pocket pistol, beautifully engraved and fitted with an attractive walnut grip, representing an excellent example of Victorian firearms craftsmanship.
Compact, elegant, and practical, percussion pocket pistols were widely carried during the mid-19th century by gentlemen, travellers, and civilians for personal protection. Their small size allowed them to be easily concealed in a coat pocket or travelling bag, making them one of the most popular forms of self-defence before the widespread adoption of cartridge firearms.
This example displays finely engraved metalwork, typical of quality gunsmiths of the period, while the walnut grip has developed a rich colour and character through more than 150 years of age. It remains in good overall condition and retains the charm and craftsmanship expected from an authentic Victorian firearm.
Historical Background
The invention of the percussion cap during the early 1800s marked a major advance in firearms technology. Replacing the older flintlock ignition system, the percussion cap offered far greater reliability in all weather conditions and quicker ignition, making these pistols dependable personal weapons.
Pocket pistols of this type were manufactured throughout Britain and continental Europe and were commonly purchased for civilian use rather than military issue. Their decorative engraving often reflected the quality of the maker, with many intended as both practical firearms and finely crafted personal possessions.
Today these pistols are appreciated not only for their historical significance but also for their elegant proportions and skilled hand craftsmanship, making them highly desirable display pieces for collectors of antique arms.
