A desirable pair of original 1941 Battle of Britain booklets, comprising both the English and French language editions issued by the British government during the Second World War.

These wartime publications were produced to document and publicise Britain’s victory in the air battle fought against the German Luftwaffe during 1940 and are important examples of official wartime history and propaganda. The English edition was issued by the Ministry of Information on behalf of the Air Ministry and published by HMSO in 1941.

Historical Context

The Battle of Britain was fought between July and October 1940, when the Royal Air Force successfully resisted the German Luftwaffe’s attempt to gain air superiority over Britain. The battle is officially recognised in Britain as running from 10 July to 31 October 1940.

Following the battle, the British government produced a series of publications explaining the campaign to both domestic and international audiences. The booklet The Battle of Britain, August–October 1940 became one of the best-known official wartime accounts and was distributed widely in Britain and overseas.

The inclusion of both English and French editions makes this an especially appealing and uncommon pairing.
