It was one of the most bombed cities in Britain during WW2

Devastating German raids on Plymouth claimed nearly 1,200 civilian lives and left 4,500 injured.

The figures do not include those who were in the armed forces – no military personnel numbers were released for security reasons.

Although cities such as Liverpool, Birmingham and London had more bombs dropped on them, when the size of the population is taken into account, Plymouth suffered the worst devastation.

In total, 72,102 homes were damaged or destroyed in Plymouth in the raids that took place between 1940 and 1944.

That is more than the total housing stock at the start of the war – the explanation being that some homes were hit two or three times.
